Fangsgiving

This year for thanksgiving, our family departed from it's tradition and came together in San Francisco, one of my favorite cities. My sister's house is full of birds- 12 birds in fact, and a cat, otter who is so fat she might as well be two cats. Otter likes to sleep on funny things, like pianos. Since Leah's job is so demanding, we spent our first few days up in Mendocino, CA without her. It was beautiful- we hiked from the beach into the redwood forest, and ate some super delicious food at some cool restaurants there.

This was at Glass Beach, where a huge dump used to be. Since so much glass was dumped into the ocean, the whole beach is now covered in polished glass of all sorts of colors and some other cool treasures. It's kindof awesome how litter can turn into treasure over the years. It took me half an hour to find a piece of blue glass which apparently are in high demand. It seemed hard to grasp a place where the definition of trash changed so much based only on history and location.

Hiking through the redwoods was amazing-it was so quiet and calm and green. The redwoods shed red pine needles so the whole forest floor was an amazing rust red, speckled with bright green shamrocks and so many mushrooms.

UNfortunately as soon as we got back on highway 1 (such a cool road) to SF, my sister's bird decided to fly out the back door of her apartment. Her favorite bird. We were all really scared and upset, and it put a huge damper on the pre-thanksgiving festivities that day. We spent pretty much all day and night looking for the bird to no avail. We made tons of posters and put them all around her busy neighborhood downtown, worried the bird could be injured, too far for us to find or even eaten by stray cats. We notified all her neighbors in hopes someone would see little Amiga.

Amazingly, on thanksgiving day we got a call, one of her neighbors had found Amiga being chased by a dog in their backyard! So crazy. Other than being scared and a little foot injury, Amiga is fine and back home, which made thanksgiving super awesome because we had extra to be thankful for and the food tasted so much better knowing that she was ok. On the day that more birds get eaten than any other day of the year, our bird was saved.

In Leah and her finace's love of birds, of course they don't eat them, so we got to have fresh crab legs for dinner, of course with the stuffing and all the mashed potatoes we could eat. All in all an awesome thanksgiving. I love my family and my life and everything that comes with it.
